The squat body sits on a rounded base with a long, thin neck. The piece exhibiting beautiful iridescence. This vessel would have been intended for use as an unguentarium, a container for the expensive cosmetic oils so highly prized by the elite of Roman society. The satirist Martial ridiculed many Roman public figures for smothering their hair and bodies with costly scented oils, yet a passion for fine cosmetics remained one of the constants of Roman daily life in all parts of the Empire. Height: 5 1/2 inches Condition: Excellent, intact and with no restorations. Provenance: Ex. Collection of Mr. G., acquired on the London market and previously from a 1980's British private collection. This piece, with several others from the collection was reportedly found in Israel.
