The Tico Class Cruisers began with the commissioning of the USS Ticonderoga CG 47 in 1983. The first 4 ships in the class had actually been ordered as Guided Missile Destroyers (DDG's), but the Navy foresaw the need for a new class of ship that would provide greater mission flexibilty and improved firepower over the DDG's. The power plants of these ships can produce 80,000 shaft horsepower from a pair of gas turbine engines. Their top speed is rated at over 30 knots. Awesome firepower is their specialty, with each ship carrying a variety of surface-to-surface and anti-ship missiles with 2 - 5" 54 cal. guns. Self defense is accomplished with the 5" guns, 2 Phalanx Close in Weapons Systems (CIWS), and 25mm Bushmaster machine guns. Anti-submarine warfare is carried out using 2 LAMPS helicopters and 6 torpedo tubes. The ship's complement is comprised of 370 officers and enlisted personnel.
Most US Navy and Coast Guard ships remain in service for 30+ years. During that time, ships undergo upgrades and changes, usually to their electronic, communication, and weapons systems. In this drawing the Princeton is configured for the late 1980s - 2018 .
