Hegarty’s Ferry was founded by John Hegarty, a former tram driver, who bought his first ferry in 1908. He and his family ran the service for almost a century, until they sold it to Sydney Ferries in 2003. They faced many challenges, such as competition, storms, fires and accidents, but they also had loyal customers and supporters. They were part of the harbor’s working history and culture .
A gold coloured Hegarty's Ferries token raised lettering on both sides reading 'Hegarty's Ferries'. Hegarty's Ferries was a privately run ferry service operating on Sydney Harbour from 1908 to 2003. Their tokens, such as this one, were embossed 'Hegarty's Ferries' and used on turnstiles that were fitted at No.6 Jetty at Circular Quay and were sold at a nearby ticket window.
