Seller: islamiqueantiques_dot_com (1,077) 100%, Location: New York, New York, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 281824222709 UNIQUE FATIMID alabaster chess piece ROOK / Rukh / Knight 1000 years old! Lifetime GUARANTEE Genuine Museum Quality RRP: £20,000-£30,000 You are bidding on the UNIQUE Fatimid chess piece shown in the photographs above. It is very difficult to capture the intricate detail on this work of art! It is much more attractive in person! The photographs do not do justice to the colour, depth and detail on this artefact! Please note that you must read the terms and conditions below in order to bid This wonderful piece of history is made of alabaster which is found extensively in Egypt. Alabaster is a hard type of stone with veins that can be polished – as seen on the underside of this piece. When it comes to rarity there is one simple question you should ask: how many similar pieces like this are available or have been available on the market in recent years. If a few have been available in ten or so years then this makes it RARE. If there are NO records of other similar pieces coming on the market then this makes the piece UNIQUE. My challenge to you is to find another Fatimid period, ALABASTER chess piece representing the Rukh! Early medieval Islamic chess pieces are very rare and found only in the BEST museums around the world. This one is even more desirable because the appearance or design is ABSTRACT rather than figural. Figural medieval chess pieces have the appearance of what piece they are representing. ABSTRACT chess pieces are more of a concept or what piece is being represented. So, a FIGURAL knight often was made to look like a man in armour. Medieval European figural chess pieces sometimes were made to look like a horse. This piece is REMARKABLE in appearance as it has the ABSTRACT reference to the head of a horse but the overall shape is magnificent! I know that an individual Islamic chess piece from this period sold in that last five years (in London) for over £100,000 and other examples have sold for more! So, what you are looking at is a UNIQUE piece of Fatimid Islamic history – a monumental historical artefact that you will only find in the best museums! In fact, there are TWO known ROCK CRYSTAL Fatimid chess pieces recorded in Museums. There is also a WOODEN one in a German museum ascribed as Fatimid and ABSTRACT form representing a KNIGHT/Rukh. I am selling this with great hesitation and reluctantly! It is simply a remarkable UNIQUE work of art! This historical MAJESTIC beauty is in overall excellent condition. There is some minor wear and blemishes that are commensurate with the age of this antique. This is insignificant and does not detract from the overall magnificence of this stone chess piece! This piece stands tall at 52mm! If you find another one of these for less than GBP20,000 you are a very lucky person! Did you hear about the £750,000 single Islamic chess piece: http://metro.co.uk/2009/10/27/david-dickinson-3422629/ Well, here it is! The price shown here is including fees: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/an-early-islamic-ivory-chesspiece-probably-egypt-1750060-details.aspx?intObjectID=1750060 To be completely honest, I know something many people do not understand: the chess piece above was worth the auction estimate of £20,000-£30,000. What people do not realise is that two new museums of Islamic Art were opening in the Middle East and they were willing to pay any price for rare & early pieces. Here is a similar KNIGHT piece estimated £40,000-£60,000: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2014/arts-islamic-world-l14220/lot.102.html Bid with confidence - read our feedback.
