Victorian fine jewelry, an authentic Egyptian scarab, most likely dating to the New Kingdom (ca. 1100 BCE), and set within a stunning 18K gold pin brooch. We have tested this to 18K, and since first listing it have found it marked .75 on the bottom of the bezel. There is no hallmark that we can find, though someone recently came into our gallery and suggested we look for a 4-digit stamp on the pin, as they believed it to be a Cartier piece. This coincides with our interpretation of the distinctly European design and what we had believed to be a continental origin. The pin measures just over 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) in length, with the scarab measuring approx. 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) along its longest dimension. From a long bygone era, this scarab was set in this brooch approximately 150 years ago, and recalls the Hermetic movement and the newfound appreciation for exotic cultures of antiquity that came about as a result of the great era of exploration. A fine, museum-quality artifact set into an equally fine piece of antique Victorian gold, this one-of-a-kind item would make an exquisite addition to any collection of fine Victorian jewelry or ancient Egyptian artifacts.
