Taffeta Wedding Gown with Cathedral Train

circa 1938-1940

Description & Design Details :   This brocade taffeta wedding gown in ivory candlelight offers a unique twist on a classic vintage style.  This dress hails from the latter half of the 1930’s to the very start of the 1940’s.  It features:

·          An allover beautifully executed botanical design in flocked velvet—impressively intact!!!

·          a conservative but certainly present cathedral length; scalloped square shape.

·          Juliet style framed neckline

·          scalloped semi dropped “waistline” heavily gathered

·          full voluminous skirt

·          long tapered sleeves with lined foldable cuffs

·          cuffs with 4/5 wee snap closures

·          fitted bodice with hidden snap closures on top of the left shoulder & side

·          carefully hand finished seams all inside

Condition :   Overall the taffeta & velvet fabrics are very good.  The flocked design appears wholly intact and is intricate indeed.  There are a few areas of faint to minor discoloration over the gown; I’ve depicted the areas of greatest concern in photos clearly with arrows.  The snap closures are all present but may need strengthening or reattaching.  The fabric shows some light strain at some of the seams with these closures and without.  The edge of the dress with the train shows some minor discoloration; these and the aforementioned issues may very well be ameliorated via a professional cleaning; but they are not glaring and do not detract from the overall impression and effect this beautiful dress offers.  This gown has a bib lining the bodice, while the rest remains unlined save for the sturdy gussets in the armscyes and the cuff region of each sleeve.  The process of flocking does slightly stiffen fabric—something to keep in mind.

Overall this wedding gown is in fair to very good condition*, with unique ornamental details and a flattering design.  It will be packaged and shipped with care.
