Mickey Mouse Club Art Corner Disney Original Production cell
One-of-a kind Original Production cel from .... His LAST theatrical cartoon "The Simple Things" circa 1953 Here's another personal piece, that I've had in my collection for many years. Time to let go. The character/cel is in Marvelous condition for it's age (over 60 years old). Cel size is 8 x 6.75 inches, with the characters are about 4 x 5 inches each. All hand painted. Beautiful hand-Inked paint-lines.  The paint on Mickey appears to be in GREAT condition.  I don't see any separation or stuck paint at all. Cel is from Mickey's last cartoon from his classic era. After 1953 he was exclusively limited to TV appearances until 1983 Mickey's Christmas Carol. This make this cel a historically significant piece of Animation history. Cel has the Art Corner Certificate of Authenticity on the back. This Animation Art cel is an ART CORNER CELLULOID that was originally Sold at Disneyland in The Art Corner Store on Main Street USA.
We have created a photographic background using screen captures from the "The Simple Things" cartoons. Background matches this scene perfectly. "The Simple Things" is a 1953 animated short subject, part of the Mickey Mouse series, produced by Walt Disney Productions. Released by RKO Radio Pictures on April 18, 1953, the short is notable as the final regular entry in the Mickey Mouse theatrical cartoon series. The song "the simple things"was sung by The Andrew Sisters in the opening. Following this short, one-shot Mickey shorts were produced: the featurettes Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983) and The Prince and the Pauper (1990), and the shorts Runaway Brain (1995), and Get a Horse! (2013).   Celluloid Cels were sold at Disneyland, in the Art Corner Shop in Tomorrowland from the mid 1950's to the late 1960's. These cels are trimmed, placed in a small matt against either a lithograph background or a sheet of colored paper. A gold seal is attached to the back of the matt which is the authenticating sticker.  Piece is know as a ART CORNER piece that was originally Sold at Disneyland in The Art Corner Store on Main Street USA.
Brief HISTORY of the Disneyland Art Corner Shop In 1955, the year Disneyland opened, in a section of Tomorrowland there was a area now long gone called “The Art Corner” which sold Disney animation cels from films such as Lady and the Tramp , Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, Mickey Mouse Club and cels from various shorts . The place was full of bins of cels that customers could paw through at will (yes, that's how it was described to me by someone who was there, and bought plenty of them)--everything from "Alice In Wonderland" to "Peter Pan", "Sleeping Beauty", numerous TV programs and shorts, etc. These cels were selected by studio artist, from the 1000’s of cels created for a production, based on attractiveness. Cels were the character (s) were Not good looking, were discarded. So only the Best ones were allowed out of the market. Every Art Corner Cel was matted and a Gold Art Corner Label attached to the backing. This label is what makes Art Corner Pieces so valuable. Plot of "THE SIMPLE THINGS": At the start of the cartoon, Mickey is seen whistling to the tune of the song "The Simple Things," Pluto sniffing behind him, spots a mussel as he tries to cover up miniature geysers along the way. The mussel then squirts water at him. Pluto barks at the mussel and the mussel barks back. The mussel gets trapped on Pluto`s tail after they fight. He pulls the mussel up and attempts to shove it off his tail but instead he pulls the mussel up and down like a yo-yo. The mussel accidentally gets stuck in his mouth. Pluto then rushes to Mickey for assistance. At first Mickey thinks that Pluto is asking for food and feeds him a hot dog. The mussel then steals Mickey's sandwich and a full pepper shaker which causes the mussel to sneeze thus freeing itself from Pluto's mouth. The mussel bounces around sneezing and wakes up a Seagull that decides to eat the mussel. The sneezing mussel escapes the seagull by entering the sea.  The hungry seagull steals the hot dog that Mickey is feeding Pluto instead. The seagull then sets his sights on the fish bait Mickey is using and unsuccessfully attempts to steal the fish while the line is being cast. Dejected but determined, the seagull then sits on top of Mickey's hat and easily steals the fish as he is baiting the hook until Mickey shoos the seagull away. He then floats under the hat to the other bait bucket and again eats the fish until Pluto notices and shoos him away. The seagull by tying up Pluto using his own tail and ears. Mickey again catches the seagull in his bait and after the bird tries to fly away carrying the bait, Mickey throws a rock in it which weighs it down. To overcome this, the seagull spells out "FREE FRESH FISH" using flag semaphore to get the other seagulls to chase Mickey and Pluto away. The short ends with the seagull floating away with fish in his mouth singing the song "The Simple Things".
