1720 Bowen Map - Cumberland Emanuel Bowen was one of the most influential of English cartographers during the early to mid-1700's. However his popularity with publishers failed to provide him with a comfortable living and he ended his days in the poorhouse. His first published atlas 'Britannia Depicta' is also his best-known. He reduced the famous road atlas of John Ogilby to a smaller size and included a series of county maps. These strip road maps were extremely popular with travellers and the atlas went through many editions. This elegant map is one of the county ones from the first edition of 1720. It shows the county of Cumberland in north west England with many of the charming lakes which form the English Lake District. The old border city of Carlisle at the end of Hadrians Wall, lies to the north. Even small villages have been included. There is a charming description of the county in the right corner of the map and a decorative cartouche framework above it. The map measures 7" by 4.5", has hand colouring and is in good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 280 years old. Shipping
