Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories is a collection of 13 animal fables published in 1902. The stories are considered a classic of children's literature.

Kipling began writing the stories down after he had told the first 3 stories as bedtimes stories to his daughter.   The stories explore how animals developed their distinctive features, such as "How the Whale Got His Throat" and "How the Camel Got His Hump". The stories also parody the subject matter and style of traditional works like the Buddhist Jataka tales and The Thousand and One Nights.

Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) was an English novelist, poet, short-story writer, and journalist. He is best known for his celebration of British imperialism, his tales of British soldiers in India, and his children's tales.

Kipling was born in Mumbai, India, and lived with relatives in England from the ages of 6 to 17. He returned to India in 1882, and a decade later married Caroline Balestier and settled in Brattleboro, Vermont. It was there that he wrote The Jungle Book (1894).

Kipling's work is inspired by British India and often explores themes of language and identity. His ideas about life as a Darwinian struggle and the natural world influenced American writers like Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Crane, and Jack London.

The stories are linked by poems and explore themes like adversity, camouflage, communication, discovery, and problem solving.
