Amazing 5 page letter from Arthur Sidney (“Sid”) Nesmith (1833-1877) of Franklin, New Hampshire. Arthur enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st New Hampshire Regiment on 31 May 1861 and mustered out on 9 Aug 1861 at Concord, Merrimack, New Hampshire. Arthur was then Commissioned an officer in Co. S, 3rd New Hampshire Regiment on 26 Aug 1861. and mustered out on 15 Nov 1862. He was promoted to Full Captain on 22 Jul 1863 and Commissioned an officer in the United States Volunteers Quartermaster’s Department Infantry Regiment on 22 Jul 1863. Arthur finally mustered out on 6 Jul 1865. -----

Sid Nesmith was known to have served on Submarine #12 and #13 as they salvaged and removed wrecks from the western waters in 1866 and 1867. Captain, United States Volunteers Quartermaster's Department, Infantry Regiment   He was the son of attorney, George Washington Nesmith  and Mary Moore Brooks Nesmith . He died at the home of his parents in New Hampshire and his remains were buried in the Nesmith family plot in Franklin Cemetery . The stone in Oak Hill is a cenotaph  as his widow's marker includes his name and dates of birth and death. He married Mary E. Moulder  on February 1, 1869 in the District of Columbia. The Boston Journal  Monday, August 20, 1877 Nesmith. Captain Arthur S. Nesmith died in Franklin, New Hampshire, last evening at the residence of his father, Hon. George W. Nesmith, of hemorrhage of the lungs [consumption]. His home is at Arlington Heights, near Washington, D.C. He leaves a wife and two children. He was in the first company raised in New Hampshire, was Quartermaster in the Third Regiment and brought home from South Carolina in 1862 in almost a dying condition of malaria, from the effect of which he finally died. ********** He enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on May 10, 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on August 26, 1861. He enlisted in Company G, New Hampshire First Infantry Regiment on May 31, 1861 and mustered out on August 9, 1861 at Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Then he was commissioned as an officer in Company S, New Hampshire Third Infantry Regiment on August 26, 1861 and mustered out on November 15, 1862. He was promoted to full Captain on July 22, 1863 and commissioned as an officer in the United States Volunteers Quartermaster's Department Infantry Regiment on July 22, 1863. His final muster was on July 6, 1865.
