1960 Dallas Cowboy “Joe Jolter” Fig. by Fred Kail

(Cast from Original 1956 Sculpture)

This is a 9-1/2” tall, hand-painted and personally signed by Fred Kail. This is solid 3 lb. casting, in mint condition, reproduced from the original 1956 sculpture .

It is about as perfect casting and painting as you will ever find. According to the Artist, it is only one of two created specifically as this one at this size with jersey No. 60. It is unnumbered, as at the time, editions were not assumed or anticipated. Respectfully, there is no specific date as to when Kail hand-painted the figure. The closest estimation would be in the mid 60's. You will note the slight mellowing in the whites. The figure is totally hand-painted, No decals were used as the were the Japanese reproductions. Casting made in USA. Additionally there is no football between the shoes which distinguishes an "original" from a reproductions.

Kail hand-painted hundreds of his figures over the years  as the old throwbacks . This figure depicts the authentic “road” uniform of the 1960 Cowboys. Dallas wore the white uniform at home of which only a very few teams at the time were permitted to do so.

Kail produced and sold his first “Joe Jolter” figurines, although not named as such, in 1956, They were first sold for $5.00 through and first the courtesy of the Baltimore Colts, followed by the Redskins, Eagles and Lions management (selling at no markup) between 1956 and 1960. Contrary to much of which has been claimed, his figures were never commissioned by the Colts, Orioles or any NFL or MLB team. They became recognized as the first of all NFL figurines and first to be licensed in 1960.

In 1960, Santa Claus Programs licensed the figures as “Joe Jolter” with the NFL (the first NFL licensed figurine). Over 100,000 reproductions were very poorly produced in Japan, cast in ceramic in various sizes, including banks, ashtrays, etc. sold in retail stores. These are still very popular with many collectors today.

“After all the pronouncements of glory and valor afforded our icons of sport, it’s a refreshing departure to behold a humbler view of our professional pastimes. The master of this alternative art is decidedly, Fred Kail. In his sculptures we’re humbled by a reminder that stardom is really a bit transparent and that indeed, unsuspecting mortals, much like ourselves, wear the badge of fame.”    Paul Hogan, Hondo, Texas
