Gold Gilded Burmese Mandalay Standing Buddha Mounted on a Wood Stand Up for sale is this beautiful, delicate antique Burmese Mandalay Standing Buddha Statue c. 19th Century, gold gilded, glass inlaid hand carved teak wood. This Buddha is depicted standing in with hands poised in the teaching mudra. The right hand of the Buddha holds a Myrobalan fruit (terminalia chebula) between thumb and index finger symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Legend tells that the God Indra gifted the Buddha with this fruit for it’s medicinal properties. Held in the varada mudra this Buddha also emanates a sense of welcome, charity, giving, compassion and sincerity. This Buddha wears the uttarasanga in the closed mode, covering the arms and chest and held at each side of the lower body by downward-stretched hands. Below, at its lower centre, appears the antaravasaka. The sanghati flows in multitudinous folds from the left shoulder; the borders of the robe are decorated with intricate glass inlay. The master carver took great pleasure in revealing the delicate folds of fabric from the heart of the hardwood. At the end of the 18th Century a new style of Buddha images emerged in Burma. Centered on the city of Mandalay, which was considered the heart of Burma’s Buddhist art, thanks to the patronage of King Mandon, a devout Buddhist himself. Mandalay Period art focused on realism in the features of the Buddha and his attire. The style of the faces is oval with long, pointed noses, full lips and eyes defined by clear eyebrows. Elongated to the shoulders, the curved earlobes are placed well behind the round ushnisha, a protrusion at the top of the head illustrating the Buddha’s enlightenment. Also notable is the glass inlaid, stripe at the rim of the face clearly delineating the forehead from the hair. This Buddha harmonizes the eye and spirit of the beholder to the meditative calm and focus of the enlightened one. Provenance: Private collection.
