In this listing - a very rare set of antique hand forged iron barn door hinge pins. These were dug while metal detecting on a rural Nova Scotia homestead that dates from 1790. The hinge pins were made to pound into a large log or beam. Huge barn door strap hinges would mate to the pins so the large barn doors could be swung out to allow a team of horses pulling a haywagon to go inside. The size of the tapered spike on these pins suggest a very large heavy set of doors. Local histories tell us the homestead was likely the site of a wayhouse and stable where the stage couch could stop and rest the horses. These barn door hinge pins are very rare. This set is interesting because you can see where the blacksmith has pounded ridges along the tapered edge to give the pin more grip as it is pounded into the wood. The smaller one has part of the taper broken off. It is 7 1/2" long. The big pin is 10 1/2" long. The round rod pin on each is 2" high and about 7/8" in diameter.
