The beauty and versatility of natural beeswax makes it valuable for both home and industry, Beeswax has so many uses from making Waxes, Soaps & Polishes to lubricating Drawers, sub aqua dry suits and Saw blades.

Can I pass on some useful Woodworking Tips?

  • As a Woodturner and woodworker myself, I use beeswax to lubricate my Bandsaw blade as it reduces wear on the blade and helps improve the cut. Most woodturners with a bandsaw normally find when trying to cut a straight line that the blade will not cut true, this is because as woodturners we tend to cut out more circles and one side of the blade wears more, it is this one sided wear that causes the problems when we want a straight cut. Regular use of a little beeswax on the blade will help reduce wear on the blade and help you cut a straight line!
  • As Carpenters most of us tend to rub some soap on screws when working with hardwoods, because it makes screwing easier and reduce the chance of getting snapped screws, and its easier if you want to get the screw back out.   But try a more traditional method instead of using soap, use beeswax instead. Rub some beeswax on your screws instead of soap –  because the soap attracts moisture which causes screws to rust.
  • When knocking nails into Hardwood, rub beeswax on the nail first, it helps to stop the wood from splitting and helps stop the nail from bending.
  • Rub some beeswax on your hand saw, this helps to keep the blade sharp, helps when cutting green or wet timber.
  • Use beeswax on your lathe dead / live centre, and it will lubtricate the point and stop burn marks in the wood
  • Make you own Beeswax wax polish (also called woodturners paste) is very easy, basically its just 50/50 Beeswax and Turpentine (not turps substitute) with Carnauba flakes being an optional extra if you want to make the polish harder wearing. There are many recipe variations for making beeswax polish and we have written below the most popular method. Melt the wax in a double boiler then remove from heat *    Add the turpentine and stir well. Pour into jars (or tins) seal and allow to cool before use.    *  Melting the wax first is optional, (its just quicker) you can just leave the turpentine to dissolve all the wax. (We also sell in our Ebay shop the Turpentine and Carnauba flakes)

2 1/2 cups Turpentine (Not Turps substitute)         100g Beeswax          2 Tablespoons of Carnauba Wax (optional)

Some information on Beeswax

The rich colour of our beeswax comes from the floral sources that the bees forage on.  Beeswax is almost pure white when first secreted by the bees and the wonderful rich colour of beeswax comes from the pollens and propolis that the bees gather, this is why the colour of beeswax varies. Beeswax has a natural high melting point of 64C (About 147F) which means that beeswax added to candles burn for longer. This produces negative ions that circulate in the room and attract pollutants in much the same way that a magnet attracts iron fillings. Dust, odours, moulds, bacteria, viruses, and other toxins are captured and neutralized. The fact that beeswax is a pure, hypoallergenic and renewable natural resource means you can feel good about using and enjoying it. Just spare a thought for the bees that fly on average 150,000 miles to make just one pound of wax!
