LAB AMETHYST

This Amethyst is listed as having "lab hydrothermal conditions" in regard to "treatment".  This means that it is cultured or manmade (synthetic) Amethyst.  Amethyst mined from the earth and Amethyst made in the lab are essentially the same chemically and as far as their properties go. In nature, Amethyst is a type of quartz. In the lab, Amethyst is made much like children salt crystals.  That is, a hot solution of salt is dissolved in hot water then allowed to slowly cool.  Hot water is able to keep more salt in solution than cold water.  As the solution cools, crystals are formed  in the shapes characteristic for salt.  In the case of am Amethyst the chemicals which form quartz are suspended in a hot solution and then cooled under high pressure.  Quartz is formed then further processed to form Amethyst.  This cultured or manmade Amethyst is for the most part identical to Amethyst found in nature except that because it is grown in the lab under controlled conditions, these stones usually have fewer imperfections  than stones found in nature.  Also, large stones can be grown for much less money. Natural stones are more valuable, and hold their value.  For example, Amethyst in sizes sold on this site can cost $30 per carat and more, whereas i can generally obtain Amethyst for less than a dollar per carat.  I use big beautiful gemstones in my jewelry and love being able to have the beauty of cultured Amethyst without the cost.  As an investment, natural Amethyst is the best bet.  Often whole sellers will claim that synthetic stones are from a particular country which is famous for natural stones.  Even if these stones were made in a particular country, the location of where the stone was made is not only irrelevant, it is misleading as it tends to give people the impression the stone is natural and thus worth more.
