Seller: paropamiso.gioielli (849) 100%, Location: Venezia, Ships to: Americas, Europe, Asia, AU, Item: 113504618577 This necklace is made of copies of burmese Pumtek beads. Pumtek bead, also known as "Buried Thunderbolt" beads, are important heirloom beads among the Chin who live in the Chin Hills of western Burma/Myanmar and the adjacent area of eastern India, where they are called Kuki. The original Pumtek beads were made over 1000 years ago by the Pyu, the builders of the first city states in Burma, but somehow the Pumtek bead art survived in the mountains, far from the fertile rice plains of Bagan in its heydays. A small Burmese industry was revived in the 1990s and once again bead makers tried to replicate much earlier Pumtek, however, these later beads are a world apart when it comes to the quality of the material and craftmanship. A curiosity: we gave some broken beads to a friend who is a paleontologist at Civic Museum of Natural History in Milano, in order to perform a test to analyze and date the material, and it turned out that it was actually petrified palmwood and dated to some millions of years ago. 59 beads.
