Lot Description:

Nine rare tools from the Sahara Neolithic . I believe these are awls used in working hides or other items for clothing.

I could also see them being used as flint knapping tools too achieve the fine secondary flaking of the flint points/tools.

They were used for years and lost in the Sahara 2,500+ years ago.

I set these back for my personal collection of 10+ years. Time to let them go reluctantly. This may be the last lot like this or next to the last. These are rare!!!

The shortest tool is 32 5/8th inch (6.7 cm).

The longer celt is length is 6 3/16th (16.7 cm).

The penny is for scale and not a part of the auction.

Background information on  the Sahara Neolithic is provided with my 2-page essay on the subject, which will be included.

Neolithic populations living near now dried lakes and rivers in what is now the Sahara desert. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which stopped the rains and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankind's march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present).

I will include my 2-page essay on the Sahara Neolithic to explain something of the Neolithic era and context in which these tools were found.
