INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. Title:Khmer Sandstone Bas-Relief Lintel Fragment 'Asuras', Angkor 'Bayon' Style. Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. "Lords of Dance". Overview: Khmer Sandstone Temple Relief Lintel Element, skillfully modeled in traditional Bayon style of the Angkorian era, chiseled from a solid block of sandstone, originating from the northern region of Cambodia. The piece was part of a 30 year private collection, and was originally acquired in the Siem Reap province, with the actual age "unknown". This is an exquisite hand-carved example of Khmer's dynamic artistry with stylistic considerations indicating an older sculpture, possibly dating from around the 14th to 16th centuries. Narrative Theme: From Khmer mythology the fragment depicts the mortal manifestation of Demonic Devas or Asuras floating in the celestial heavens poise in a precaruous dance position, performed with their legs open while displaying contorted hand gestures, and flanked at both ends by two voluptuous female attendants seated beneath them as they exhibit hand gestures while holding lotus flowers. xxxxx The Asuras, concidered to be the gods of the primeval world are fashionably clothed in traditional Khmer attire wearing stylized Sampots, folded over a plain belt, with naked upper bodies heavily adorned in jeweled necklaces, armbands, and bracelets. Their hair is tightly braided and pulled up into a topknot secured by a band, accented by triangular earring pendants draped from their elongated earlobes. xxxxx The Female Attendants, probably Apsaras, are bare breasted dressed in long sampots folded over a simple belt, with similar jeweled ornamentation and wear a fashionable topknot. They are divine creatures poised as courtesan maidens for the amusement of deities, gods, and asuras, as they display charming and attractive attitudes capable of stealing the hearts of their spectators. The stone sculpture is symbolic of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia presented by the "Lords of Dance" and dramatic arts, with its style and proportion made in accordance to the Hindu texts on Arts. The sandstone fragment, once part of a complex lintel or wall segment, is a well preserved section, chiseled in deep bas relief from a solid slab of sandstone, intricately rendered, with detailing still clearly visible, and no condition issues, showing even wear on the entire surface, with a superb patina penetrating the stone, along with minor degradation of the surface from extended exposure to the natural elements in which it was maintained.
