Overview: An exceptional sandstone figure of an Ayutthaya Buddha, seated in 'sattvasana' on a lotus base, originating from a temple precinct in the historical province of Ayutthaya in north central Thailand. Surviving objects such as this piece and elements from temples were rarely found intact with most religious figure being lost, pillaged, and some destroyed during the process of the devastating war with the Burmese Army in 1767 Ayutthaya's art and culture remains known today as an extensive Archaeological site, that is recognized in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Thailand, and is a time commonly called the 'Ayutthaya' Period in Thai Art History. Description: The image portrays a meditating Buddha depicted seated in the 'Virasana' pose on a lotus throne. The left hand rest palm open on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture. The figure is clothed in a smooth clinging diaphanous garment in the Theravadin Buddhist fashion, with the robe folded across the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered. xxxx His facial expression is serene with downcast eyes set below ridged eyebrows, well-shaped smiling lips, and exaggerated earlobes.
