Possibly 13th C. Beng Mealea Temple Relic. Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Museum Quality! Overview: A superb Khmer sandstone fragmented head of Lord Shiva, hand-carved in traditional 'Bakheng' style, beautifully executed from a solid block of dense sandstone, from the temple of Beng Mealea, near the Kulen Mountains of Cambodia. The sculpture retains excellent clarity, rendered with distinct facial features, powerful downcast expression, and ornate formalism, measuring 17.75 inches (45.0cm) in height, without the museum mount. Description: A profoundly spiritual image, hand-carved in relief, portraying a softly contoured face harmonious within the volume of the head, depicting a serene contemplative expression, reflecting humility and compassion, with downcast eyes, and smiling mouth. The eyebrows are arched in relief and join in the middle above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with wide lips, mustache, and elongated earlobes. The hair is tightly matted, forming vertical rows surmounted by a cylindrical-shaped topknot, decorated with horizontal rows of looped hair and the crescent moon, bound by an inter-connected 'diadem' crown, secured by a simple knot at the back. Data Observation: Excellent condition, with minor degradation of the surface, with dings, dents, and pitting being a natural part of the stones patina. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item. The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with a superb reddish-brown patina, penetrating the surface of the stone in wonderful mottled variations of hues and colours, which has leached from both the interior of the sandstone and the environmental conditions in which it was maintained.
