Description: A superb 11th century hand-carved Khmer Hardstone Male Deity Figure, probably that of 'Shiva', stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Baphuon' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its unrepaired condition as found, elegantly modelled from a solid block of hardstone. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Facial features of the statue retain characteristics of the previous 'Banteay Srei' style, but appear more delicate, and a reddish-brown hardstone was used. XXX The piece reflexs characteristics linked to both Dvaravati and pre-Khmer statuary of the period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era whos art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The stone remains in solid condition with some partial loss to the left arm and feet, alone with minor dents, pitting, and surface degradation.XXX The carving measures 23.625 inches (60.0cm) in height, including the custom fabricated removable steel stand. XXX The deity is masterfully modelled in realistic human form, standing in Mon Dvaravati style 'tribhanga' or Triple-Flexion posture, with the right hand positioned in the symbolic gesture of instruction, the Vitarka mudra, while holding an attribute. He stands in 'Samabhanga' with the left arms broken, wearing a smooth clinging diaphanous sampot worn high on the hips with the navel visible, secured by a stylized belt, fashioned in a swirl. There is the slightest indication of a sway at the left hip extended in subtle rhythum. XXX The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, wide mouth, and elongated earlobes. The hair is tightly braided in vertical rows, drawn onto the top of the head to form a bulb-shaped Chignon, held in place by a jeweled band. XXX Originally hand chiseled from a reddish-brown hardstone, the fragmented portion is an exquisite example, unaltered, and professional mounted. The statue reveals a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of molted variations of hues and colour throughout. The surface showing minor degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes after extensive exposure to the elements over time. Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the burial environment in which they were unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as displayed.
