Coptic textiles, used for rugs, wall hangings and clothing appliques, were exported throughout the Roman and Byzantine empires. Coptic tunics and shawls were standard garments during this time. Medallions (circular ornaments) were commonly placed at the shoulders and knees of tunics and at the four corners of rectangular shawls however this example most probably came from a wall hanging, given the size. Condition: Fragment as described, overall in good condition with expected minor discolouration and losses to the edges. Custom framed. Dimensions: diameter at widest: 14 inches (35.6 centimeters) Provenance: Asian museum deaccession, ex Christies London.
