Seller: sf-fineart (2,897) 100%, Location: Los Angeles, California, Ships to: Americas, Europe, Asia, Item: 390489503892 Details: ANCIENT HELLENISTIC TERRACOTTA ASKOS IN THE FORM OF A ROOSTER, circa 3rd Century B.C. This is a magnificent original ANCIENT HELLENISTIC TERRACOTTA ASKOS IN THE FORM OF A ROOSTER, circa 3rd Century B.C. This rare and unusual askos (flask with a spout) is in the form of a rooster with detailed incised lines and traces of original red and gray pigments. It is of hollow form with an opening at the top of the back and a spout at the beak. Askoi shaped like animals were commonly used as lamp fillers; the oil was introduced into the askos via the small inlet on the top, and was then poured out through a tiny hole at the beak into the lamp in a smooth and controlled stream. Although Magenta ware is believed to have been made across the Graeco-Roman world, the prevalence with which animal shaped askoi have been found in Italy suggests an Italic origin for this piece as well. It measures 6" long, 4 ¾" high and is in good original ancient intact condition aside from a few minor chips due to age and wear. PROVENANCE: Bel Air, California Estate. Authenticity is GUARANTEED.
