Title: Rare Antique Bronze Chinese Buddhistic Temple Guardian Lion Staff Finial. Chinese Art. 19/20th C. Description: The Staff Finial is exquisitely modeled in traditional Chinese style, cast of bronze, unaltered and unrepaired, with intricate detailing of the features, depicting a wonderful archaic style Chinese Buddhistic Guardian Lion's Head, elaborately casted in typical Chinese taste and mythical fashion, rendered with a ferocious facial expression, with eyes bulging outward in emotion, the mouth gaping wide open with rows of teeth, large snail-shell hair curls, and decorated with incised swirled motif. The base is modeled with an ornate column designed to fit a metal or wooden staff. From Ming times, Buddhistic Lions are a classic theme in Chinese art and culture, introduced through Buddhism as powerful mythical symbols of good fortune and defenders of law and protectors of sacred buildings, fending off demons and evil spirits. They were presented as guardian figures flanking the enterances of temples, imperial palaces, and emperors tombs, relating to the 'Lamaistic' concept that Buddha, upon entering his temple, ordered the lions, which accompanied him to seat themselves and await his return in motionless obedience.
