Title: Antique Bronze Early Lanna Style Chiengsaen Buddha Head Fragment, Temple Relic. 17/18th C. Overview: A superb 17/18th century bronze Chiengsaen Buddha Head, fragmented, once part of a complete portable meditating Sakyamuni Buddha image, rendered in traditional 'Early Chiengsaen' style, and measures 4.25 inches (10.80cm) in height. The head, with rounded face, depicts a serene meditative expression with downcast eyes and a smiling mouth. Sharply outlined curls of the head dip into the middle of the forehead, arched eyebrows set above almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and well proportioned lips are slightly recessed at the corners. The head covered in small snail-shell hair curls, whorled to the right, surmounted by a domed 'Ushnisha', and crowned with a rathed tall bulbous ornament finial, supported by a small band. A subtle indentation separates the forehead from the hairline, long pendulous earlobes frame his face, and three rings of enlightenment are visible at the neck. Lost wax cast, the bronze is thickly poured, with a natural wonderfully aged dark brown patina of molted variations in colour, heavily encrusted in green malachite oxidation developing on the surface, from extensive exposure to the elements and environment conditions in which it was maintained. The core within the bronze, consisting of a tempered sandy-clay mix, is completely intact and visible at the base. Data Observation: Exceptional Head; Excellent condition; Sandy-clay Core; Good solid piece as displayed. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
