TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Antique Bronze Fragmented Statue of the Hindu God Shiva. 17/18th Century. Description: An exqusite bronze Hindu statue depicting a multi-armed representation of Lord Shiva in human form standing in rhythmic movement, a posture used to defuse the negative forces in the Universe . Shiva (the auspicious one) is one of the principle deities in Hinduism. He is the supreme being, lord of the universe, destroyer of evil, and the transformer of worlds. xxxx Hollow-cast, Shiva is shown with eight arms raised on either side, holding attributes in each hand, while simultaneously displaying the 'Karana' mudra, the gesture which demons are expelled. The multiplicity of the arms emphasizes the deity's immense power and ability to perform several acts at the same time. The great god Shiva is richly crowned and adorned in jewels, wearing a sheer diaphanous garment covering the left shoulder, secured by an ornate belt hung low about his waist, decorated in elaborate strands of beaded jewels, and flanked by a flanged sash to both sides. The garment itself is simplistic in design, and suggest the presence of an undergarment visible at the hem of the outer. xxxx Shiva's meditative expression relays a powerful blend of calm and spiritual enlightenment, with almond-shaped down-cast eyes, a prominent nose, wide mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes draped in elaborate earring pendants. The head is covered in a floral headdress, hair matted, rising to a floral and jeweled ornament. xxxx The statue originated from Nepal, and was sculpted as a full figured standing image, primarily hollow-cast as one piece from an alloy of copper and tin, called bronze, mounted on a removable stand under the arms as shown. Origin:xxxxxxxxx Indian, Nepal. Period:xxxxxxxx 17/18th Century. Composition:xx Hollow-cast of Bronze, with oxidized patina. Dimensions:xxx Height: 17.0 inches (43.18cm) without the removable mount. Observation:xxx Excellent Condition, with minor dings, & casting flaws. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
