TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Antique Bronze Meditating Lao Sakyamuni Buddha, Laotian art. Temple Relic. Early 18th C. Laotian Style Art with Mon Dvaravati Influence. Overview: This particular bronze image is of a rare and sacred Laotian Meditating Temple Buddha, considered to be one of the earlier eighteenth century representations of the Buddha, portrayed seated on an elevated plinth, in the subduing Mara position, and with the head covered in hair curls and domed ushnisha only. A technique very interesting, as it demonstrates the influence of Mon Dvaravati schools of sculpture, which started to emerge from previous styles, and spread throughout surrounding countries. Image Details: The image of Buddha is depicted seated cross-legged in meditation with the left hand resting palm-open on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Maravijaya' mudra, or the gesture of subduing Mara. The Buddha is portrayed with a downcast expression, the face is serene, with well defined features, wearing a monastic garment which appears diagonally covering the left shoulder, with a wide end fold draped to his mid section. The head is covered in tightly curled hair rising to a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', rounded at the top. Other features - pierced eyes, smiling mouth, small band separates the forehead from the hairline, long hands with fingers of equal length, elongated earlobes, and well-carved feet and toes. The entirety is supported by a Lao style elaborately tall single level pedestal without ornamentation.xxxx Cast in bronze (copper) with approximate 2% tin, giving the sculpture the reddish hue. The naturally aged surface is covered in a somewhat of a multi tone patina, with green malachite oxidation developing throughout, from years of exposure to the environmental conditions in which it was maintained. NOTE: VERY THICK CASTING - EXTREMELY HEAVY PIECE FOR ITS SIZE. Data Observation: Extremely Heavy. Excellent condition, with only minor imperfections. The core within the bronze is completely intact, consisting of a tempered sandy-clay. The bronze is extremely heavy for its size, with the alloy being thick within the sculptures body. The figure remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
