Overview An extremely rare 11th to 13th century bronze meditating Mon Hariphunchai Buddha - a distinctive style and iconography which emerged out of an intricate interaction of Hariphunchai and several other schools. Primarily were the Mon of central Thailand, and northeast Thailand. These essentially Mon ingredients were than mingled with those of the provincial Khmer schools of the same period (11-13th c), along wih features from Pagan Burma, with its legacy of Pala art from India (9th-12th c), which were also added to the mix, thus creating this unique blend tyypically called "Mon Harriphunchai". This example explisidly depicts the interaction between schools of the same period, creating a uniquely diverse form of the lord Buddha. Image Details: A spiritual image of a Mon Hariphunchai Buddha depicted in typical crude style, seated in the position of the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation and attainment of spiritual perfection , crossed-legged in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot. His profile is slim, wearing a sanghati robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder with right shoulder left bare, and graced by a heavily-pleated flap draped just below the shoulders. The Buddha features a square face, with staring almond-shaped eyes , curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, wide full-lipped mouth, and elongated earlobes rest at his shoulders. Incised lines emphasize the raised ridge of the eyebrows, the upper lid of the eyes, and the broad mouth, which are all trates found in Mon Hariphunchai images. The head is covered in large Mon style snail-shell hair curls of a 'flatten' style, surmounted by a conical-shaped 'Ushnisha'. XXX The entirety is supported by a single level pedestal without ornamentation. The bronze surface has naturally aged to a deep chocolate brown patina partially covered with malachite oxidation. The core within the bronze is completely in tact, consisting of a tempered sandy-clay. The figure remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues.
