CLOSEOUT SALE - PRICE REDUCED FROM - $3,599.99 - GREAT VALUE Title: Antique Bronze Statue of a Female Multi-Armed Hindu Goddess 'Saraswati Mata'. 17/18th Century. Description: An exqusite bronze Hindu statue depicting a multi-armed representation of 'Saraswati Mata', daugther of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. Also known as Sharda Devi Mata, she is the goddess of knowledge and the arts, embodies the wisdom of Devi, and is the river of consciousness that enlivens creation, and the goddess dawn who dispels darkness of ignorance. Goddess Saraswati is generally shown to have four arms, which represent the four aspects of human personality in Learning; mind, intellect, alertness, and ego. In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is celebrated as a feminine deity with healing and purifying powers of abundant flowing water. Image Details: The deity is depicted as a beautiful goddess shown with four arms about her, seated on a Lotus pedestal, playing the Hindustani classical musical instrument, a 'Sitar', with her two front hands, while her other hands hold the sacred Pustaka and a circle of Rosary Beads. The multiplicity of the arms emphasizes the devi's immense power and ability to perform several acts at the same time. xxxx The goddess is clad in a sheer diaphanous garment covering portions of her voluptuous figure, with bare breast decorated in modest strands of beads. The garment itself is simplistic in design, buttoned to the left side and open at the back which compliments her seductive attitude. xxxx The goddess's expression relays a powerful blend of calm and spiritual enlightenment, with almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, wide mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes draped in elaborate earring pendants. The head is covered in a floral headdress, bound by an inter-connected crown, rising to a floral and jeweled ornament finial. The back of her head is draped in braids of looped hair-tails, pinned with a small halo. Note: Ironically, upon close oberservation, the finial atop the musical instruments neck is in the form of a Swan's head, which most sculptures of Saraswati display the Swan as the mount in which she is found sitting on. xxxx The statue originated from India, and was cast primarily solid, with the exception of the lower section which has a tempered sandy-clay core embedded with rice husk. Cast as one piece from an alloy of copper and tin, called bronze, with the highly desirerable 'blue-jean blue' patina. Origin:xxxxxxxxx Indian. Period:xxxxxxxx 17/18th Century.
