DISCOUNTED AUCTION SALE PRICE - REDUCED FROM $5,600.00 - GREAT VALUE Antique Clear 'Phra Hin' Quartz Crystal Meditating Lanna Buddha, Stupa Relic, 17th C.Historical item from the famous 'Kru Hod' Prefecture, Chiangmai Province. Description: An exquisite antique hand-carved 'Phra Hin' Stone Meditating Lanna Buddha, recovered from a Stupa excavation near the Burmese border of northern Thailand. The image is beautifully rendered with impressive authority from high quality natural stone, mined from the earth, with historical considerations indicating an age of 300 years old or earlier. Transparent Relics of this type represent the God of infinate light - calm, peace, and contentment, and were typically used as commemorative objects, modeled in the form of Buddha images, placed in small clay vats within the interior walls of monumental 'Stupa' structures (conical towering spirals), constructed as religious sanctuaries, objects of veneration and a place associated with the life of buddha and in remembrance of the buddhas existence and his enlightenment. Buddha is portrayed seated in the 'Vajrasana' pose, with legs crossed and both soles of the feet pointed upwards. The left hand rest on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, 'Calling the Earth to Witness' gesture. The figure is modeled with broad shoulders, inflated chest, and a narrow waist, clothed in a long monastic robe, worn in the 'Open' mode, diagonally over the left shoulder, with the end fold of the robe draped from the shoulder to his chest. XXX His face has a serene meditative expression, with downcast eyes, arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth, and elongated earlobes rest at his shoulders. The head is covered in hair-curls, indicated by a ridge between the forehead and the hairline, surmounted by a conical shaped Ushnisha, which rises upwards to a "removable" flame ornament finial. XXX The entirety is supported by a small triangular shape pedestal, flat at the bottom. The surface of the stone is partially covered with remnants of gilded lacquer pigment, and encrusted soil deposits embedded throughout the creviced areas, from the environment in which it was recovered. Excellent condition, naturally aged transparent stone with no cracks, chips or repairs, with the exception of a fracture running through the face, as is found in quartz of this type. Definition: Phra (Buddha) Hin (Thai name for "Stone"). NOTE: This item was visually inspected by a gemologist through the Archaeology and Fine Arts Department of Thailand, as stated a young 'Precious' Stone Family. A historical item from the famous 'Kru Hod' Prefecture, Chiangmai Province. Data Observation: Natural transparent colour stone. EARLY METHOD OF MAKING CRYSTAL RELICS: Glass - making in ancient Southeast Asia began with quartz, small pieces of the material would be finely crushed and mixed with 'halophyte' plant ash (a major source of alkali). The quartz-ash mixture was then heated at a fairly low temperature in clay containers to roughly 750 degrees celsius, until it formed a ball of molten material. This material was then cooled, crushed, and mixed with color agents to make red, blue, or green. After coloring, the glass would be funneled into a cylindrical clay mold and heated a second time at a higher temperature. Once the container cooled it would be broked and the thick glass ingots that formed during the cooling process were removed. Finally, modeling, scraping, grinding, and polishing were the techiques most widely used during the finishing process of the object.xxxx Early quartz crystal objects of this type have been defined as the first highly technological compositions, and to emphasize its status as an artificial medium, rendering it effectively a precious stone.
