INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Antique. Rare Southeast Asia Mon Davaravati Standing Buddha Figure, Bronze, Lopburi Period. 11/12th C. Overview:x Sacred 'Mon Dvaravati' Buddha, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Mon style, bearing Indian influence; portrayed standing in 'Tribhanga' posture on a square plinth, with both hands raised in mudra. The figure was recovered from a collapsed Stupa in the historical Lopburi province, one of the oldest occupied districts in north central Thailand, a district subordinate to the rule of the Khmer Empire, and subsequently came under the influence of their art and culture by the 13th to16th century, a time commonly called the Lopburi period in Thai art history. Image Details:x Buddha is depicted standing bare foot in 'Tribhanga' or Triple Flexion pose, having both hands raised in the same symbolic gesture of Instruction, the 'Vitarka' mudra, where the tip of the thumb is pressed slightly against the index finger. The figure is somewhat symmertrical in its profile, modeled wearing a smooth clinging diaphanous garment worn in the 'Closed Mode', covering both shoulders, which includes an undergarment draped lower than the rounded hem of the outter loin cloth. There is the slightest indication of a sway at the right hip, extended in subtle rhythum, clearly more visible from the back. His contoured face is highly detailed in a serene contemplative expression, with open eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, wide full-lipped mouth incised, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by large snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed ushnisha, rising to a small ornament finial. The reverse skillfully reflects the un-interrupted emphasized Dvaravati A-sexual attribute. XXX Lost wax casted, the bronze alloy has naturally aged to a dark brown patina, covered with malachite oxidation. The core at the base consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, with embedded fossilized rice-husk patterns. This skillfully executed image is a superb example of the Mon Dvaravati artistry produced during the Lopburi Period. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of this divine iconic in human form with lively imagination and conviction.
