Temple Relic. 13th C. Overview An extremely rare 13th century terracotta Mon Hariphunchai Buddha Image - a distinctive style and iconography which emerged out of an intricate interaction of Hariphunchai and several other schools. Primarily were the Mon of central Thailand, and northeast Thailand. These essentially Mon ingredients were than mingled with those of the provincial Khmer schools of the same period (11-13th c), along wih features from Pagan Burma, with its legacy of Pala art from India (9th-12th c), which were also added to the mix, thus creating this unique blend tyypically called "Mon Harriphunchai". This example explisidly depicts the interaction between schools of the same period, creating a uniquely diverse form of the lord Buddha. Image Details: A spiritual image of a Mon Hariphunchai Buddha head fragment, depicted in typical crude style, the remains of what would have been a full figured standing image of the Buddha, originally designed and fitted as a temple wall segment. His profile is serene, with his head turned slightly to the left, featuring a somewhat oval face with downcast almond-shaped eyes, curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, wide full-lipped mouth, and elongated earlobes. Incised lines emphasize the raised ridge of the upper lid of the eyes, and the broad mouth, which are all trates found in Mon Hariphunchai images. The head is covered in large Mon style hair curls of a 'flatten' style, without an 'Ushnisha'. XXX The surface of the clay ha as naturally aged patina partially covered with encrusted oxidation. The fragment remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues, with the exception of normal casting flaws and fractures found in thick-fired terracotta examples.
