Description This listing is for a woman's folk costume from the Pokuttya region in western Ukraine. The ensemble includes an embroidered chemise (sorochka), leather sheepskin vest (keptar), wool wrap skirt, apron, and long woven belt. The costume can be worn in several different ways and not all of the pieces are essential. The chemise, skirt, and belt make up the basic costume and the vest and apron are optional and can be worn as desired. Please review all of the photos below where I have shown the full costume as well as the basic variation without the vest/apron. The skirt can be tied in several different ways and you can continue to layer additional pieces as well. The chemise is made of homespun linen with hand embroidery on the shoulder, collar and cuffs. It is in very good condition with only some minor spots on the shoulders. The wool skirt is woven by hand and has a range of colors in the vertical stripes and around the border. It is in excellent condition with no holes or noticeable damages. The sash is also in excellent condition and is long enough to wrap around the waist several times. There are many different types of aprons worn in this region of Ukraine and the one included here is one of the most recent variations with multi-colored geometric woven designs covering the entire surface and fringe along the bottom. The apron is in perfect condition. The sheepskin vest is decorated with embroidery and applique as well as wooly trim around the collar. There is significant wear to the vest as it has seen many decades of use. There are stains all over plus damages to the embroidery and trim. There are patches of missing fleece on the interior as well. Despite the damages, it is a nice display piece and adds an additional dimension to the costume. This would make a wonderful addition to any Ukrainian heritage museum or to display at festivals.
