Seller: artemisgallery (683) 100%, Location: Louisville, CO, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 381620216579 Chimu / Inca Copper & Gold Chalice and Cuff (pr) Pre-Columbian, modern day Peru, Chimu or Inca culture, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. These are two gilded copper items that were probably used for religious offerings; one is a small chalice made of two pieces, and the other is a hollow cylinder metal "straps" holding it together. The Spanish conquistadors were amazed by the level of skill that the people of the Andes had in gold and copper smithing; the Chimu smiths even created copper alloys using gold. The remains of the workshops where there artisans created these items have been excavated in Chan Chan, the Chimu capital. Delicate pieces like these were made by hammering sheets of copper or gold around a wooden mold while the metal was heated to make it more malleable. Size: 2.1" W x 2.25" H (5.3 cm x 5.7 cm). #112658 Condition: Both have patina and wear; these pieces are largely intact but quite delicate. Provenance: Ex-Boston, MA collection acquired before 1975.
