An oil on canvas painting after the original created by the Italian Baroque artist Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato (1609-1685), also referred to as Sassoferrato, the name of the town where he was born. In a beautifully carved and gilded wood frame, the painting tenderly represents the Virgin Mary dressed in flowing blue, red, and white robes and composed as Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa in Latin) pressing her hands together in a prayerful gesture as she looks out from the canvas with a pensive gaze. Sassoferrato's oeuvre was highly revered through the mid-19th century as people associated his work with the School of Raphael. Very little is known of Sassoferrato's biography. We do know that he apprenticed with his father, the painter Tarquinio Salvi, and while the rest of his training is not documented, scholars believe he worked under the Bolognese Domenichino who was an apprentice to the great Annibale Carracci (ca. 1580). Sassoferrato's style and technique also demonstrate the influence of Guido Reni, Francesco Albani, Albrecht Durer, Guercino, and Raphael. A Size: painting itself measures approximately 29.25" L x 23.5" W (74.3 cm x 59.7 cm); 37.25" L x 31" W (94.6 x 78.7 cm) in frame #114631 Condition: Several old repairs to canvas , some still showing damages to the canvas. Canvas would benefit from restoration and cleaning but still presents very well. Frame with a few nicks and abrasions as shown but still serviceable.
