Truly stunning workmanship in a simply stunning design.
This little quilt was made from a larger quilt that had unfortunately, had damage. We salvaged this beautiful block and will attach a copy of the label that was with the original quilt.
Label states:
Owned by Mrs. J. W. Bolen
Made by: Mary Jane Blackmore in 1854 Spring Creek Va.
Measures 22 1/2" by 22 1/2"
Hand bound in a period, c1850 turkey red that has small black and cream dots. This original fabric was found as the backing of an early quilt, and had a 24" selvage.
Expertly handquilted at 10 tiny stitches per inch. Pencil marks still visible, this has never been washed.
Hand appliqued.
Just check out the tiny, expertly made points in the double rows around the center medallion.
In good condition with one 1" patch on the corner and some age spotting noted, not treated. (See photos)
Just delightful.
A wonderful example of fine quiltmaking from the mid 19th century.
A one of a kind piece for the collector.
