Byzantine Period, 8th-12th Century AD
Bronze, medium-sized reliquary cross (enkolpion), uninscribed, with slightly flaring arms. The two halves are complete and intact, including hinges, however there are no pins so the two halves are each separate, but seem to be clearly a matched set from antiquity.
The patina is a dark green with some mottled surface encrustation.
Nice example of the type with superb provenance.
Height: Each half is approximately 2.25" inches long (4.5" inches when laid opened)
Condition: Intact as shown in the photos, with remains of light earthy encrustation.
Provenance: Ex-Carroll Wales Collection. See photos for full bio. Also, published by Fragments of Time as #19 in Ancient Art XVIL , November 2008.
