An exceptional Celtic La Tene Culture iron ring pommel short sword circa 200 B.C. This came out of the Halstatt / La Tene territory that extends from France and Germany through to the areas above Greece bordering on the western Black sea coast. It is in very fine condition considering it's 2200+ year internment and it is most certainly from the grave of a fallen warrior. The knuckled rib at the grip and the iron rivet at the base of the cutting edge are still present. The ring at the end of the pommel still shows it's acute angled edge which remains sharp and quite distinct. Most of the blade's surface area exhibits a very pleasant grey/blue patina. Rarely do ancient iron objects ever show an original patina much less this large smooth intact surface. This is the best one of these I have ever seen. It was purchased in an auction house in Germany several years ago. This measures 15.5" overall and 2.5" wide at the base of the blade. The base of the blade is over 1/4" thick. The weight is 393g (just short of 14 oz.). The sword shows some areas of rust with the very end of the blade tip missing but it is quite strong and robust for it's age. There is remarkably little rust for this kind of item and mostly that rust is stable. These types are available from several other sources on the internet but their condition does not come close to this item's remarkable preservation.
