Standing upright and alert, its stocky form is typical of Han artistic traditions. Produced in a single bivalve mold, the piece maintains an attractive green-red glaze throughout. The ram, domesticated in ancient China for both its meat and wool, was also considered a symbol of filial respect, since it was said to kneel when taking its mother's milk. Models such as these (known as ming-ch'i) were a central component of Chinese burial practices and were often related to daily life. The inclusion of animal miniatures within such contexts bear witness to the importance of raising livestock in ancient China. Xunzi, a follower of Confucius wrote that: "one adorns the dead as though they were still living, and sends them to the grave with forms symbolic of life." This piece was once part of the world renowned Schloss Collection and remains an appealing and highly charismatic piece of ancient Chinese art. Condition: Excellent, unrestored. Length: 4 1/4 inches. Provenance: Ex collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Schloss. Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi (terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian, he was a prolific collector, well respected authority and author of the major publication "Ancient Chinese ceramic sculpture from Han through T'ang". Schloss arrived in the US from Latvia in 1940. He was an accomplished cartoonist, working for many years at the New York times. The Schloss collection is rare in that it truly represents an educated collection of art; Schloss was immersed in Chinese ming-chi art and only collected beautiful examples of specific types, as well as the unusual, the charming and the rare.
