Seller: artancientltd (9,489) 99.4%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 350896064551 Material: Terracota, Original/Reproduction: Original, Genuine or Reproduction: Genuine, Region of Origin: China, Primary material: Terracotta, Dynasty: Six Dynasties (222-589 A.D.), Details: This charming grey earthenware statue of a Chinese Zodiac rooster figure dates to the Six Dynasties Period (220-589AD), an era wracked by disunity, political instability and civil war. The piece depicts the animal posturing in guard of its surroundings, looking quizzically or even nervously at whatever lurks behind it. Beautiful sweeping incisions are used to reflect its plumage. The rooster may have sat alone or possibly alongside other figures as part of a set of twelve depicting the other animals of the zodiac. It would have resided either in a domestic context or as part of a mingqi collection. Chinese legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river, with the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. The rooster spotted a wooden raft and helped the monkey and the goat to cross with him, in return his companions cleared the reeds out of their path as they went. In Chinese tradition those born in the year of the rooster are seen as hard working and loyal with high moral standards, they are also considered to be natural leaders. The "Rooster" years are: 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017. Condition: The piece is in very good condition, as shown. It is unrestored and has age related wear and encrustation. Height: 4 1/4 inches. Provenance: This piece is from a large number of mostly Chinese antiques, purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum & Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Scans of the exhibition flyer, obtained from the previous owner, can be supplied to the buyer upon request.
