Many of the most valuable pieces will be sold by Bonhams in an upcoming auction. This polychrome fragment is very colorful with nice figures and floral elements. The Egyptian textiles of the early centuries AD, known as Coptic are among the finest groups of textiles in the history of art. Mingling classical, Near Eastern, and Byzantine elements the textiles display unusual combinations of abstract, geometric and realistic motifs. Although a few Coptic textiles come down to us in the form of whole garments, most survive as small fragments pilfered from shallow graves by local inhabitants. Garments were ruthlessly torn up and the ornamental parts put out for sale. In almost all Coptic garments, the fabric was woven in linen. The ornaments were tapestry woven in colored wool and undyed linen. This is an Excellent exmple nicely framed for display.
