An exceptional, large bichrome jug (or oenochoe), from the Cypro-Geometric period of Cyprus, dating to approximately 950 - 750 BC. A fantastic example of an iconic Cypriot type, seldom found of this size, condition and with such a strong provenance. The globular body sits on a ring base; the right angled bifurcated handle connects the upper shoulder of the vessel to the mouth, tapering slightly at its end. The trefoil shaped mouth sits atop the short cylindrical neck. An array of eight concentric circles painted in black and umber adorn the front and back of the vessel, giving an appearance somewhat reminiscent of the speckles on a bird’s breast (such as a thrush). In this way of viewing the pot, the trefoil mouth becomes the head and beak of the vessel, and the concentric circles on each side become abstract wings. Height: 14 inches Condition: Completely intact and unrestored. One of the finest examples we have seen. Provenance: From the collection of the artist Michael Michaeledes, acquired in London, 1960s-early 1970s.
Michaeledes was born in Cyprus in 1923 and moved to London in 1955. He was a successful artist and his works are represented at museums and institutions throughout the world. Most pieces in his collection appear to have been purchased in London salerooms in the 1960s.
