Size: 9¼ x 6¼ inches; 1 pound. In 1922, one of the most fascinating discoveries of all time was made; the tomb of Tutankhamen. Since then, the study of ancient Egypt's culture and religion has greatly increased. Museums all over the world are exhibiting the artistic treasures of ancient Egypt, and the public is flocking to see them. This profusely illustrated volume was originally published in 1923 in London. At that time the author, Sir Ernest A. Wallis Budge, was the keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities in the British Museum. Included here are hieroglyphic texts of hymns to Amen and Aten, translations, and illustrations by the author. Lord Carnarvon and Mr. Howard Carter were the discoverers of the tomb of Tutankhamen. Shortly after the expedition, Lord Carnarvon died from illness and infection. His death, however, gave rise to the legend that anyone who entered the tomb would have bad luck. Although Carnarvon's contribution to art and archaeology were enormous, he did not leave any findings on the ancient history of 1400 B.C. If he obtained information from the tomb that would amplify public knowledge on the reign of Tutankhamen, he did not publish it. For a time it was mistakenly supposed that Tutankhamen was a great king because he left behind a great treasure. This volume sets the record straight. Sir Budge traces the evolution of religion from the worship of Amen, the god of successful warriors, to the cult of Aten, the sun god, to the beginnings of Egyptian monotheism. The story is much more than the dry bones of history; the mystery of Tutanhkamen's parentage and the power wielded by his wife; a king's daughter and a predecessor of women's liberation, as well as the failure of his successors to combine idealism and religious reforms - a conflict not unfamiliar to the contemporary church - are described in picturesque detail. All in all, an invaluable resource for the layman. CONDITION: NEW. New (but NOT unblemished) hardcover w/dustjacket. Bell Publishing (1988) 160 pages. "New" in the sense that it is unread, but the dustjacket does evidence moderate shelfwear. There's a one inch closed (neatly mended) edge tear to the lower right corner of the front side of the dustjacket along with a slight fold mark which runs parallel to the edge of the dustjacket. There also a one inch tear to the top left corner of the front side of the dustjacket at the spine head, which is accompanied by a 1/2 x 1/2 inch chip (piece missing), again, both the chip and the edge tear neatly mended. Otherwise there's just miniscule dustjacket edgewear overall. Considering the book sat on a bookshelf for 25 years, the moderate edgewear to the dustjacket is not unexpected. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly unread, though of course possibly flipped through a few times while in the bookstore. The covers are clean and unblemished. Keeping in mind that the book is 25 years old, the overall condition is entirely consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store (such as Barnes & Noble, for instance) wherein patrons are permitted to browse open stock, and so otherwise "new" books often have become slightly blemished and/or show a little handling/shelf/browsing wear. Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PROMPT SHIPPING! HEAVILY PADDED, DAMAGE-FREE PACKAGING! #1560j. Wallis Budge's book on the Egyptian King Tutankhamen was written in 1923, only a year after Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb. The book goes over the history of, not only Tutankhamen, but also of the religions of ancient Egypt, being at this time Amenism and Atenism. A good portion of the book also discusses the Pharaoh Amenhetop IV. Amenhetop being the previous name at the time of inauguration, if you will, in which the reigning religion was Amenism (thus tutenkhAMEN, and AMENhetop), which was polytheistic. Once gaining having his revelation that the Sun god Ra is the one and the all mighty, he changed his name to Akhenaten, changing the religion to Atenism (thus AkhenATEN). Many theologists, historians and anthropologists have argued that Atenism is indeed the first monotheistic religion in history which would predate Judaism. Many of Budge's translations of hieroglyphics into the English language have been argued and disputed times over, yet his books still makes for a good read. REVIEW: This little book reviews the development of the Egyptian solar religion and is an extension of Budge's former book "Egyptian Religion" published in 1899. The present book was originally was published in 1923 immediately after the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb but was apparently written somewhat earlier. Information on Tutankhamen takes up only 13 of the 152 text pages. As such it does not contribute new data to the story of Tutankhamen, but it is an excellent reference to the religions of ancient Egypt prevalent at the time of Tutankhamen's reign as Pharaoh. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). The shipment will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $9.99 to $37.99 for an insured shipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. That’s why all of our shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
