Created from common materials, but possessing the majesty of gold and semi-precious gems, the ceramic now known as faience was used by the ancient Egyptians for a variety of luxury objects. Dolls were fashioned from it, as were baby feeders decorated to magically protect mother and child. Faience could be shaped into mummy masks, amulets, chalices, bowls, inkwells, jewelry, tiles and inlays for furniture. Its great popularity could have been due to one particular characteristic: radiance and brilliance, to the Egyptians a perfect metaphor for life, death and rebirth. This work analyzes the significance of faience, and presents illustrations of nearly 200 pieces drawn from public and private collections in Europe and America. Thames & Hudson (1998) 288 pages. Pages are almost pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, bearing only light reading wear. I'd guess that the book has been at worst read only once). I'd think it more likely that it has only been flipped through a few times, then put away never to be actually "read" (cover-to-cover). Dustjacket evidences modest edge and corner shelfwear, principally in the form of some edge wrinkling, but no significant tears or chips. There is however a slightly-light faded strip across the top edge of the front side of the dustjacket, perhaps a half inch wide. There's no other significant blemishes to the dustjacket except for the fact that if you hold the dustjacket up to the light, you can see some mild rubbing. The dustjacket is high gloss black, and so will show faint rubbing even merely from being shelved between other books. We placed the dustjacket inside a new mylar sleeve so as to prevent any further wear to the dustjacket. Beneath the dustjacket the full cloth covers are clean, however the bottom edge of the covers evidence accelerated shelf wear, as if the book rested on and was perhaps dragged across a fairly roughly finished shelf. The cover edges are not worn through to the substrate, just more wear that one would expect given the excellent overall condition of the rest of the book. Oversized, heavy books like this are oftentimes awkward to handle, and I'd bet someone simply slid this back and forth, or in and out, on a roughly finished book shelf. Given the (superficial, cosmetic) mild blemishes to the book, it lacks the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy". Nonetheless it is clean and only lightly read, perhaps only flipped through. For those not concerned with whether the book will or will not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it's a solid copy with "lots of miles left under the hood". The photography is perfectly brilliant. The large hard cover book feels luxurious. I find I can learn more from exhibition catalogs than from any other type of book on Egypt. Diverse Egyptologists write up different pieces, explaining the symbolic significance of the subjects, colors and materials. The book format with a center section of color plates and a following set of discussions about each piece is easy to use because of small black and white reference photos and page number references to the color plates.
