There are two opposed horizontal loop handles which have simple nipples at their extremities. Interiorly, the concave surface of the plate is adorned with five black concentric rings, the innermost and outermost being broad bands. A further black band adorns the rim of the plate. The normally undecorated underside of this otherwise unremarkable plate is profusely decorated with an elaborate and highly unusual scene. The circular base ring is divided into quadrants by painted strips containing rhomboids of stylised netting. One quarter depicts further hatched nettings. Another quarter depicts a quadruped, possibly a deer. Other quarters appear to depict a bird in flight and another human or animal figure.Of the greatest rarity, a similar plate decorated with two deer and what appear to be weighted nets can be found in the Cyprus Museum (Dikaios, A guide to the Cyprus Museum, 1961, PL XII no.3). Diameter: 12 inches (handle to handle).Condition: Very good, intact and with no restorations. Provenance: From the collection of the artist Michael Michaeledes, acquired in London, 1960s-early 1970s. Michaeledes was born in Cyprus in 1923 and moved to London in 1955. He was a successful artist and his works are represented at museums and institutions throughout the world. Most pieces in his collection appear to have been purchased in London salerooms in the 1960s.
