Seller: artancientltd (9,406) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 271221522887 A beautiful, rare and well provenanced Ancient Roman amber glass Date flask, dating to approximately 50 - 100 A.D. The vessel naturalistically modelled as a juicy date, showing numerous folds and reflecting the warm colour of the ripe fruit. The flask was made from a two part mould, perhaps originally modelled in plaster from a real date in antiquity. The small neck and ring lip would have been worked while the glass was still hot by the master ancient glassworker. Dates were a popular foodstuff in the Eastern Mediterranean during ancient times. Date flasks such as this are some of the most desirable ancient glass vessel types and were largely made in what is now Syria, Israel and the Lebanon in the 1st-2nd Century A.D. They may have been used to hold scented ointments. Height of flask alone: 2 1/2 inches. Height including custom mount: 3 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good. A tiny area of the lip restored, otherwise intact, with no cracks. Provenance: Ex. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, gift of NP Carter, 1930. Ex Sotheby's New York 11/12/2002 lot. 129.
