Odin (rarely Одын; Old Icelandic/Old Scand. Óðinn, Swed. Oden, Old Saxon Woden, Old Frankish Wodan, German Wotan) is the supreme god of late Germanic and Scandinavian mythology. He was the god of death, wisdom, healing, battle, kingship, sorcery, madness, war, poetry, victory, and hunting. Also, Odin could interpret runes. Depicted as the husband of the goddess Frigg.
For Scandinavians, Odin's name was synonymous with battle and war. He appears in myths as a god who bestows victory. Odin had the ability to change his appearance at will. Myths say he travels the world as a one-eyed, gray-bearded old man who leans on a stick and wears a wide-brimmed hat. Odin is associated with the Wild Hunt as he soars across the sky at the head of a company of slain in battle. As the god of wisdom, Odin is a seeker of wisdom, to the point where he sacrificed his eye to drink from the wisdom-giving spring of Mimir. To discover the runes, Odin sacrificed himself to himself.
The Old Norse word Óðinn is derived from the earlier *Wōðinaz, which coincides with the West Germanic form of the name. Adam von Bremen deduces the name of the god worshiped by the pagans of Scandinavia in the 11th century, describing him as "Wodan id est furor" ("Wodan, meaning 'fury'."), which is considered a likely explanation even today, and which echoes with the names wōd (Old English), wōds (Gothic), *óðr (Old Norse), all meaning "furious, furious, possessed".
Snorri Sturluson's Edda depicts Odin as the patron of fallen warriors who have died in battle, he receives them in his hall called Valhalla. Fallen heroes, the einherjar, chosen by Odin, must help the gods in their final battle at the end of the world, Ragnarok.
In the sagas, Odin often acts as an instigator of wars, he sends valkyries to turn the tide of battle in the desired direction and take the dead heroes to Valhalla.
Sometimes Odin even appears in person. In one version of the Battle of Bravall, Odin personally arrived to take away the old King Harald Hildetand. On another occasion, when Helgi Hundingsbane distinguished himself in battle, and his cousin wanted to avenge the death of his father, who had been killed by Helgi, Odin lent him his spear. Arriving in Valhalla, Helgi was honored as one of the greatest warriors.
The Edda tells us that Odin is the son of Bestla and Bor and the brother of Ve and Vili. Together with them, he overthrew the frost giant Ymir and created the world from his body. "Wille" is an Old Germanic word for "will" ("will" in modern English), "Weh" is a Germanic word for "woe" ("woe" in modern English), but We is probably related to the archaic Germanic "Wei" which means holy.
Thor is the most famous son of Odin by Yord, the earth goddess. But his wife and consort is the goddess Frigga, who according to tradition is the mother of their common son Baldr. From the giantess Grid, Odin had a son Vidar and from the giantess Rhind he had a son Vali. Also, many royal families claimed descent from Odin.
Odin's attributes are the eight-legged horse Sleipnir and the severed head of Mimir, who prophesies the future. He is served by the Valkyries, who take the souls of fallen warriors from Valhalla to aid Odin in his final battle at the end of time. Odin's residence is Asgard. Odin imprisoned one of the Valkyries, Brunhilda, in a ring of fire for disobedience, from where she was rescued by Sigurd. He was just as harsh with Hades, the blind god who accidentally killed his brother Baldr. Odin and the giantess Rhind raised Vali's son to kill Ged.
Odin owns numerous magical artifacts: the dwarven-forged spear Gungnir, which never misses, the magical golden ring Dropnir, from which eight new rings appear each night, the eight-legged horse Sleipnir, and two ravens, Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory). , who travel the world and collect information for him (the Crook Flag is considered one of Odin's symbols). He is also served by a pair of wolves, Gary and Freki ("Greedy" and "Gluttony"), whom he feeds his food, since he himself does not eat anything, only drinks wine. From his throne of Glidskjalf (located in Valaskjalf) Odin can see everything that happens in the world.
