Smith Philadelphia. This is a beautiful and quite rare 10.5"-diameter leaded glass or stained glass round window insert that was made by the H. J. Smith & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The reason I am confident that this is a sample or display window is that it came out of a local auction with about 10 other pieces and most of them had small metal hooks or hangers that looked to be original to the 1930s. Often stained glass shops would have samples of their work hanging in the store. Even Tiffany made samples to show potential clients. One thing that’s really great is that it comes with an original brochure / catalog from the 1930s. H. J. Smith & Sons was one of the better leaded glass designers in the U.S. and did very large jobs for some of the very wealthiest people. This sample is quite beautiful with a blue background and a small bird flying down to a pedestal with the sun shining behind it. There are flowers in green and red with hand-designed details in black. I can tell this piece was never inserted as it does not have normal weathering that leaded glass has from sitting outside for years. In the blue background glass there are 3 or 4 small fractures, but none in the colored and painted areas except the very outer yellow border that also has some small fractures. They are quite hard to notice and I do not think they take away from this historic and rare piece of stained glass. The catalog that you get with this measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 16 pages. It shows many examples of their work in different interiors. This catalog is undated but I can tell from the style it is late-1920s or early-1930s. The catalog does have a horizontal fold and a small tear on the back page. Don’t pass this piece up as you rarely find leaded glass panels that you can identify the maker.
