Antique Chinese Brass String Gnomon Sundial Compass .
Rare Antique Folding Brass String-Gnomon Chinese Sundial Compass. The blue stone/bead may be lapis, and has a gilt Chinese character written on it. There are 3 other red/gold (amber?) stones or beads. The enamel plate has both Chinese and Arabic numerals on it. The directional iron pin/needle is operational, and there are 4 Chinese characters representing 4 points of direction. I am not positive but I think there is a good chance that the string has been replaced. The vertical plate attached to the string folds down over the enamel plate. There are 3 leveling screws. Looks like the leveling vial no longer has fluid in it. I know of no other repairs, or replacements to this item. Approximate dimensions: 4 1/4" long, widest 3", height open 3 1/4", height closed 1". I purchased this item at a going out of business auction held at Frey's Antique store in Hemet, California. The posted photographs are an important part of the physical description.
