Welcome to my ebay store: This beautiful pair of hand painted early antique salt and pepper shakers came from an estate collection from New England. I had MANY spectacular pieces from that collection which have all mostly sold. I am unable to determine the maker of these shakers. They look a lot like Mt. Washington pillar shakers BUT they are NOT glass. They are much heavier- like a stoneware or glazed porcelain material. Personally I think they may be English/ Chinese export or German  porcelain.  The inside is a glazed white. The exterior is hand painted in a beautiful subtle shade of pale bluish green celadon-like color. There are leaves and fruit, the fruit are orange and yellow. I am not sure if they are supposed to be plums or berries. The style reminds me of early English hand painting. There is a  Red 'B' on bottom, similar to an early English porcelain mark. The potter Bagnall was a partner in 18th C Newhall and there is one mark listed on old and sold dot com that is a very similar B. Just conjecture on my part but possible. The pattern on the unglazed base also has an earlier impression overall. The bottoms are smooth unglazed marked with a red 'B 184' and what looks like a FAINT circle in bottom center. These are old, many items I acquired from that estate included early Staffordsire, Pickard, etc. The sterling caps were probably added later,  are threaded as are the tops of the shaker. The previous owner had cotton thread wound around the tops of the shakers to keep caps on tight--New England ingenuity. There are some dents in the lids and I would probably find a more age appropriate set of caps or display without them, they are either silver plated or solid sterling. They DO have the tell tale Victorian style cut outs of stars which seem later than the style of these shakers.   There is really nothing like this pair on ebay and an extensive search on non-glass pillar shakers has been challenging. Most of my items are one of a kind and these are no exception.  Use on your table or add to a collection display.  All items ship from my smoke free home.
